Vang Vieng is a small town nestled in amongst scenic limestone karsts on the Nam Song River, located approximately 160 km (2.5 to 3 hours drive) north of Vientiane along road number 13, and is surrounded by picturesque countryside. Traditionally popular with backpackers travelling overland between Luang Prabang and Vientiane, the town is now becoming popular with other visitors to Laos as a pleasant side trip from Vientiane, and now has some comfortable standard accommodation available. The limestone karsts contain numerous caves, and it is possible to visit many of them. Some caves are more easily accessible, whilst others require some fitness and a more adventurous nature. There are plenty of other options and activities available in Vang Vieng including bicycle hire to explore the surrounding countryside or villages, tubing, kayaking, caving, hiking or relaxing by the Nam Song River with a drink and a good book!!
